BASIC STEPS TO PODCASTING

A Step By Step Guide

1) Download your show from the CFRO station computer and burn to disc.

2) Edit your show on Audacity (OPTIONAL)

3) Upload the mp3 of your show to Archive.org or your own personal file server space. (HOW TO)

4) Start a blogger.com account (HOW TO)

5) Post an entry on your blog linking to your mp3 URL (HOW TO)

6) Create a feedburner.com and burn your feed (HOW TO)

7) Publicize your feed on your blog or website (HOW TO)


How To Publicize Your Feed To Your Blog

1) Log in to your feedburner.com account
2) Select your account

3) Select the "PUBLICIZE" tab

4) Select the "HEADLINE ANIMATOR" on the sidebar and select "CREATE NEW"

5) Create a New Headline Animator by selecting the "180x100 White" theme from the drop bar.

6) Scroll down and select "ACTIVATE"

7) To "ADD" this RSS subscription widget to your site find "BLOGGER BLOG" in the drop bar and select "NEXT"

8) Select "ADD TO BLOGGER"

9) Chose the "TITLE" that you would like for your widget and select "ADD WIDGET"

10) You will see that it has shown up in your "LAYOUT". "SAVE" the page and "PREVIEW" your site.

11) Your subscription widget should show up in the top right corner of your page.


Now your readers and listeners can subscribe to your blog or podcast.

Creating a Feedburner account

What is feedburner.com?

[NOTE: This is the step where we turn your blog and mp3s into a podcast.]

Enter "http://www.feedburner.com" into your browser

Enter your blog's URL in the text box, check the "I am a podcaster" box, and select "NEXT"


Select the RSS option and select "NEXT"


Enter the TITLE and URL of your feed and create a Feedburner account. NOTE: Your Feed Title will be the name of your podcast. So name your feed the name of your show.


Now your Feedburner account is set up and you're ready to start podcasting.


BUT FIRST: Provide some more information about your podcast.
  • Choose the CATEGORY of you show so when people search for a specific type of show you're will show up in the searches.
  • If you have an IMAGE for your show hosted online you can use that as a picture affiliated with your podcast.
  • The SUBTITLE should be a brief description of your show. For instance, "Airs every Monday from 12pm - 1pm PST on CFRO 103.7fm" or "Farsi News from Vancouver, BC on CFRO 103.7fm".
  • You can add more information about your program in the following SUMMARY section.
  • KEYWORDS allow people to search for your show easier. Add keywords that are directly affiliated with your show and it's common themes.
  • Now select "NEXT".


Check the "Item enclosure downloads" box and select "NEXT"

Now you have a feed for your podcast.


The next step is promoting your feed on your website or blog so people can start subscribing to your podcast.

How to Post Music to your Blog

Go to blogger.com and sign in to your account.

TITLE: Title your blog entry the date on which you progr
ammed your show.

BODY: Enter the text that you'd like to use as the link to your mp3. For Example, if your program is called "The Reggae Show" and was hosted on "January 3rd, 2009", you may want to type out "The Reggae Show - January 3rd, 2009" (or perhaps just the date.



Highlight the text you just entered and select the button with the "chainlink" image in the tool bar.

Enter the URL to your hosted mp3 in the pop-up. Press "OK". (Your mp3 must be hosted on a website other than CFRO's archives!)

The text you just highlighted should turn blue and will now link to your mp3. You can "PUBLISH" your post.

All done! Now go to your page and test the link.

How To Host Your Mp3 on Archive.org


Archive.org website

Enter "http://http://www.archive.org into your brower

Start by creating a profile on Archive.org by clicking the "JOIN US" button (See my
RED square)


Fill in the necessary information and click "GET LIBRARY CARD". Remember your screen name and password as you'll need them to log in later.


Back at the main page click the "UPLOAD" button to begin uploading your mp3. (See my
RED square)


Enter the title of your work (preferably the name of your show followed by the date it aired. For instance, "The Reggae Show - Jan 3rd, 2009"



Fill in the remaining information about your show. Click the "BROWSE" button to find your mp3 on the computer. Then click the "UPLOAD" button to begin uploading your mp3.



"Please wait while your files upload..." (This may take 5 minutes to an hour depending on your internet connection)


"Please wait while your page is created..."


Click the blue, underlined text to go to your page



Right-click on the blue text underlined text and "Copy Link Location" so you can access your mp3 later.





Now your mp3 is hosted by archive.org and can be accessed anytime. You can use the URL of your mp3 to post on your blog.

How To Create A Blog On Blogger.com

Enter "http://www.blogger.com" into your browse.

Click the "CREATE A BLOG" button


"Create a Google Account" by filling in the required information and click the "CONTINUE" button.


"Name Your Blog" by filling in the required information and click the "CONTINUE" button. You can re-name your blog anytime, however, you
cannot change your URL.



"Choose a Template" and choose the look of your blog and click the "CONTINUE" button. You can change the style, format, and colours of your blog anytime.


"Your blog has been created". Click the "START BLOGGING" button

How To Set Up A Myspace Account


Go to Myspace.com
What is Myspace.com

1) Enter "http://www.myspace.com" into your browser.



2) Click the "SIGN UP" button



Choose the MUSICIAN sign up if you'd like to post snippets of your program.



Fill in the required information to create your profile. NOTE: You'll need a email address that you can share with all of the programmers of your show.

Under "MUSICIAN NAME" you may want to enter "[Name of Show" (CFRO)]



Check the box and select "SIGN UP"


Provide some more details about your show: GENRE is the type of music you play, etc. If you have another website or blog put that information in the "WEBSITE" box. Select the "UPDATE" button.


Select "BROWSE" and find a a profile photo on you computer (Note: Must be a .gif or .jpeg). NOTE: It would be fun to have a picture of all your show's programmers in the studio.


Enter the password of you email account to send an email to all of your contacts. They will have an email sent to them asking to be your "Friend" on Myspace.


Go back to your email account and confirm your Myspace account
Now you are ready to connect with your listeners through Myspace.com

You now have a Myspace page where you can connect your show with friends and listeners.
